Back to Avatar Escape Index
We see an open clearing in a forest, and the panda form of the spirit Hei Bai is sitting in the middle of it.
Aang: Hei Bai!!!
Aang comes into view and hugs Hei Bai
Roku told me I'd find you here!
Hei Bai: RRAAAAWWW!
Aang: I'm happy to see you too. I don't suppose you've seen Avatar Kyoshi around, have you?
The screen blacks out, and when the picture reappears, Aang is riding on Hei Bai. He sees something off camera and points at it.
There she is!
Kyoshi appears in another clearing, and Aang dismounts Hei Bai to go talk to her
Avatar Kyoshi: It's nice to see you, Aang. Sorry about that whole "wrongfully accused of murder" thing back in Chin Village
Aang: That's okay.
A box comes on screen reading: Fun Fact- Kyoshi lived for 230 years, making her the oldest Avatar in history.
Avatar Kyoshi: After Chin the Conqueror died, I helped the world live in balance. I accomplished a lot of good, but I also made some mistakes...
The camera shows a distant shot of Ba Sing Se from above.
One of my greatest challenges was dealing with a peasant uprising in Ba Sing Se.
The camera shows a crowd of angry peasants shouting at Earth Kingdom soldiers. Angry Peasant: Down with the Earth King!
Now we see the palace from far above. Slowly, a huge crowd of people completely surrounds it. Avatar Kyoshi: The peasants felt that the Earth King's role was outdated and that he did not represent their interests. So they stormed the Upper Ring.
There is a shot of the front of the palace, as the peasants pull down a large statue of a previous Earth King.
The peasants destroyed priceless historical artifacts and buildings- anything that represented the "old government."
Now we see the throne room of the palace from a short distance away; we can barely make out an old man sitting on a throne.
The Earth King summoned me to help him end the revolution.
A box comes on screen as we see a close up of the king. The box reads: Fun Fact: The 46th Earth King is the current Earth King's great-great-great-great grandfather.
Earth King: I don't care how you do it, but I want you to squash those unruly peasants.
The camera flashes to Kyoshi Avatar Kyoshi: I won't do it.
The king stands up in anger and points at Kyoshi.
Earth King: How dare you defy your King! Guards, arrest Avatar Kyoshi!
Guards surround Kyoshi. She simply stomps her feet, creating cracks in the ground, and then sends out a powerful gust of air, blowing away all the guards. She marches right up to the Earth King and towers over him Avatar Kyoshi: How dare YOU defy your Avatar! Are you ready to make a compromise?
Earth King: Yes...
Avatar Kyoshi: I don't like this revolution either. But everyone in this Kingdom must have a voice if balance is to prevail over tyranny. So I propose this- you will listen to the peasant's grievances and I will protect your interest's and Ba Sing Se's cultural heritage. Agreed?
Earth King: Agreed...
The camera shows Kyoshi training a group of earthbenders. The strike out with their hands, climb walls, and destory solid earth with gloves made of rock. Finally, we see a shot of the Dai Li in their traditional uniforms.
Avatar Kyoshi: I immediately set to work training an elite force of Earthbenders...They would be silent, precise...and feared by all. They became known as the Dai Li.
The camera flashes back to Aang and Kyoshi in the clearing
Aang: You trained the Dai li? But they're the worst, most corrupt Earthbenders in the world!
Avatar Kyoshi: I thought I was doing the right thing by creating a group that protected cultural history. I had no idea what they would become. Aang, our actions always have an effect. somtimes positive, sometimes negative...and sometimes not for many lifetimes.
Kyoshi helps Aang get back onto Hei Bai
Hurry! You must find the Waterbender Avatar who came before me.
Aang: But I don't even know his name!
Avatar Kyoshi: His name is Avatar Kuruk.
Meaningless Note: Again, capitalization curiousities. Once, it is written "Dai Li" (when Kyoshi says it), and once, "Dai li" (when Aang says it).
