Newsarama has posted a review of the next Avatar DVD, due to be released on May 6th. Although a good portion of the review is dedicated to Day of Black Sun, there is also quite a bit about The Western Air Temple, The Firebending Masters, and both parts of The Boiling Rock, episodes that have yet to be aired in the U.S. Obviously, that means major spoilers. Click the below link to read just the spoilers, or click here to access the full article.

“Without giving too much away, what’s important here is it establishes a bond between Sokka and Zuko. The overall plot is the two breaking into the Fire Kingdom’s ultimate prison with the intention of liberating Sokka and Katara’s father. This time, the prison itself is as much a character in the overall plot. This is one case where one wishes DiMartino and Konietzko did provide a commentary track. I would have loved to have heard how they thought this one up.
More important is what Sokka and Zuko find awaiting them once they’re inside. These two episodes are loaded with incredible plot twists and surprises, but all fit seamlessly into the overall story. My favorite though is the final confrontation between Sokka and Zuko against Azula, Ty Lee and Mai. It pulls off one final rug out from under us viewers, one that if we thought the entire thing through, should have seen it coming.
The final opinion is when push comes to shove, “Boiling Rock” has to be the best written and executed episodes of this series, at least so far. It’s an incredible study in character development and maturing for the two primary boys.
In fact, if one has to make one interesting comment about this disk, it’s really more about Zuko than any other character here, even Aang. In “Western Air Temple” Basco has a fairly long monologue with himself that is another standout performance. By the time he is done, one realizes he’s finally starting to enter the terrain previously only occupied by Iroh, even if he still has a ways to go.”
…
“Western Air Temple” is about the Gaang and Zuko coming to terms to each other. Personally, I found it the weakest of these four new episodes. Not that it is a bad episode. More so I found it just a bit too pat. I mean c’mon Avatar fans, we all just KNEW Zuko was going to end up being Aang’s teacher, especially after Azula was introduced. The way the various kids react to Zuko is also highly predictable, although how he finally wins them over has its moments.
On the other hand, what truly is outstanding is Konietzko’s art design. The Temple itself is admittedly one of the best bits of background work the man has ever done. It’s a site that if it was designed by MC Escher, the great artist would have called it one of his masterworks.
Still, if we didn’t have “Western Air Temple,” it would have made the next episode, “Firebending Masters” rather clumsy to execute. It kicks off with a small twist, that Zuko’s fire bending ability was triggered by the years upon years of rage that had built up in him throughout his life. With his finally being accepted by the Gaang, the rage level drops to virtually nothing and his ability with it.
This sends Aang and Zuko on a one episode quest to meet the original fire benders, a race that is rumored to be extinct. As forumites know all too well, that certainly isn’t the case. More important, it introduces an interesting twist that harkens back to the wisdom of Zuko’s Uncle Iroh. Long term, I found this episode exceedingly satisfying because of DiMartino’s ability to weave in the unexpected in a truly logical way. We have always accepted Iroh as much wiser than he makes himself out to be. With this episode, his wisdom borders on being truly enlightened, as an action he performed way before the kids were born has long term effects even in the present.”

I’ve recently been messing around with Javascript, and as a result, the audio downloads page has been “JavaScriptified”. When you move your mouse over a row in the table, the entire row highlights, which should make it much easier to follow the row across the screen and make sure you’re clicking on the right download link. Also, just for fun, I added a little code that automatically opens the download link for the mp3 format of a song when you click on the box containing its title, as my download trackers say that over 90% of people download the mp3 format.
Just a few cool little features to make your audio-download experience a little bit more enjoyable

A new audio file has been added, the much-requested music for the Season 3 Trailer shown at Comic-Con last year. Download the mp3 here, or go to the audio page for the link.

I randomly noticed today that an older editorial of mine about Sokka was no longer on the site, and the link to it was down. No idea how that happened, but I’ve fixed it now. Also, all the old comments have been saved. Re-enjoy!

I just wanted to fill everybody in on what’s going on with the site recently, as I’ve been mostly absent for a while.
First of all, for the many people who noticed that Waterbender was completely down for a few days, there wasn’t much I could do about that. The server that the site is hosted on underwent major upgrades. The downside of that was the site being offline for a few days, but that’s done now. The upside, though, is that you should notice significantly faster page load and download times, so that’s good
Screencaps are now being posted again; 306 has been uploaded, 307 and 309-10 will follow soon.
There’s a new archive page for news posts which I think is cool, check it out here. There’s also a new archive page for the poll, accessible via the link under the poll.
Finally, my latest speculative editorial, entitled “Book 3-Part 2″, is complete, and will be posted once I finish translating it from plain text to HTML.

After a long time of the entire audio page not working, I finally fixed the error. Woot! It only took 5 complaint emails to get me to do it!
So you can now check out the audio page and download the files again.
On a related note, to the many people who have emailed me asking me to add new files, I have no control over when new files get uploaded, as all of it is from The Track Team’s MySpace.

The episodes page has been updated in a couple of ways, among other things, the main page now lists the correct original air dates for all season 3 episodes, is up to date through episode 315, and has images for all of the episodes that have aired so far in the US. Also, the bios and page for episode 302 has been updated, and character bios are up to date through that episode. The screencap links on the 301 and 302 pages have been updated, and caps for episode 303 have been added. The index page for all character bios has also been updated with the new entries in the database, and will continue to be updated until I’m completely up to date. On a totally random note, the FAQ page has also been updated.
On another slightly unrelated note, I have until Tuesday to submit a list to Dongbu Feng of the team members for Waterbender.com in the Inter-Fansite Olympics, and I’m still short a couple people. If you’re even considering showing up for just a few of the events, and joining in all the fun, e-mail me now, you’re running out of time. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered.
Finally, thank you to everyone who has voted for me on the Topsite, I’m now #5 on there, which gives me my own special little box on the list. Thanks very much, and keep voting!

I’ve gotten a few e-mails from people saying that they want to be on the olympics team, but I need more. I also need to send in the list of everyone on the team by January 10th. So, if you even thought that you might have been interested, please e-mail me at “webmaster@water-bender.com”. If you want details, check out the post below this, or this post on Dongbu Feng.
Also, in response to some disappointed e-mails, yes, I’m still maintaining the site, I just took a break. I’ll be going back to the regular updates you’ve come to expect within the next few days, so look forward to that.

Yay! Tonight in the Dongbu Feng chat, the Avatar Interfansite olympics was announced. If you weren’t there, sucks for you. Read the rest of the post for details.
Basically, a bunch of major Avatar websites are going to put together teams for a “friendly” interfansite competition. Each team will consist of 15 to 25 members. The sites participating so far are:
Distant Horizons, Airbender.Net, Dongbu Feng, Gyatso’s Temple, Flying Bison, Blue Spirit Gal, Kataang Forever, and myself.
Here’s a lowdown of the rules:
- Sites participating will need 15 members (with a max of 25) submitted to webmaster@avatarolympics.net by January 10th. We’re still accepting sites as well, and any site that can get the required number of competitors is eligible.
- The Olympics will take place from January 14th (opening ceremony) to February 15th (closing ceremony). Also, to be clear, this is NOT based on Avatar’s season 3 return, because there is not date yet, don’t mistake the 15th for the day that the show comes back (though that would be cool!)
- Fandom teams will be accepted for those who do not make the Fansite teams. Fandom and Fansite teams will compete in pretty much the same events, but their standings will be separate. Essentially the Fandom teams compete against other Fandom teams, and the Fansite teams compete against the other Fansite teams.
- People can only join one team. Also, they cannot be on a Fandom team and a Fansite team, only one.
- There will be many activities in which people can earn points for their team, including fanart, writing, video and scavenger hunts. Full details of the events will be available soon at the official site. There will be some live events, but those will be announced in advance and only a certain number of participants from each team will have to be there.
If you have any questions, contact Jake of Dongbu Feng.
If you want to be on the team for this website, just e-mail me

A while back I got screencap crazy and started taking DVD caps for every episode. That ran strong, and I did most of season 2, but then I stopped doing it. Oh wells. Anyways, the point is that I found a program that will take a DVD and convert every frame, or every 5 frames, or whatever, to a JPG file.
So, on the plus side, very soon I’m going to add DVD caps from EVERY SINGLE EPISODE. In addition to that, as soon as a new DVD comes out, I’ll be able to add caps from it within hours of when I get it. Woot!
The negative is that taking generic caps every second produces some duplicates, and some cool shots are missed (such as in action scenes). Still, better than no caps it all.
Edit: DVD Screencaps are now up for “The Awakening” here. View them, and tell me what you think of the quality, as well as the layout of the gallery Also, note the nicer URL
