Background Info: Sozin was the one who started the war that has lasted over 100 years. He somehow harnessed the power of a comet to dramatically increase the strength of his and his entire nation's firebending, using that strength to deal a deadly first strike against the other nations. That comet now bears his name. Apparently, Roku tried to stop him from starting the war, but was too late. Details on this are forthcoming in Season 3.
